A heated debate has erupted over a road closure in Exeter, a city in the UK. The road, Dryden Road, was made exclusively for cyclists during the COVID-19 pandemic, a move that has sparked controversy and divided the community. But here's where it gets interesting: the council is now considering reopening the road, and the debate is heating up!
The closure of Dryden Road was initially intended to create a safer cycling environment and reduce traffic in the area. However, some residents and commuters have strongly opposed this decision, arguing that it has led to increased congestion and unsafe conditions on nearby roads. A petition, with over 2,500 signatures, urges the reopening of the road, claiming that it provides a safer and more accessible route for pedestrians, cyclists, and vehicles alike.
"The current restrictions have caused traffic to spill over onto residential streets and busy bus routes, creating an unsafe and unhealthy environment, especially for those walking to nearby schools and nurseries," says Helen Montgomery, the petition's creator.
The council acknowledges the concerns raised and has decided to conduct a consultation to gather public opinion. They've presented three options for the future of Dryden Road, each aiming to balance safety, accessibility, and the needs of different road users.
Option one proposes installing a bus gate, allowing access to authorized vehicles like taxis and emergency services, while maintaining a 20mph speed limit. Option two suggests a one-way system with a contraflow cycleway. The most popular option among those advocating for reopening is option three, which would restore two-way traffic and include painted cycle lanes.
The council has also proposed a fourth option, titled 3b, which suggests reopening the road without implementing any cycling infrastructure. This option, however, has been criticized for potentially compromising the safety and accessibility of cyclists.
"This option will provide suitable access for only a few people and may exclude most potential users, raising safety concerns," admits the local authority.
Local campaigner Ian Frankum, who has been advocating for the reopening of Dryden Road, believes that option three is the only viable solution. "We've always maintained that there's room for everyone on this wide road, and only option three offers that," he states.
The Exeter Cycling Campaign has encouraged people to participate in the consultation, emphasizing the importance of safety, connectivity, and value for money in active travel initiatives.
