A Highly Contagious Threat Returns: Measles Alert in Canberra

Measles, a highly contagious virus known for its distinctive rash and other unpleasant symptoms, has made an unwelcome appearance in the ACT. But here's where it gets concerning: a traveler, unaware they were infectious, visited several public places in Canberra, potentially exposing others to the disease.

The ACT Government Health and Community Services Directorate (HCSD) confirmed the case late on February 20th, involving a traveler who had recently returned from overseas. Authorities are now working to trace and advise anyone who may have been in contact with the infected individual.

And this is the part most people miss: even if you weren't directly in contact with the traveler, you could still be at risk. Measles is airborne, spreading easily through coughing and sneezing. It can take up to 18 days for symptoms to appear, which include fever, fatigue, runny nose, sore and red eyes, cough, and a characteristic non-itchy, blotchy red rash that starts on the face and spreads to the rest of the body.

If you were at any of the following locations during the specified times, HCSD urges you to be vigilant for symptoms:

  • Hertz Car Rental Agency, Canberra Airport: Monday, February 16th, 5:00 pm - 7:30 pm
  • Arrivals Area (Ground Level), Canberra Airport: Monday, February 16th, 5:00 pm - 7:30 pm
  • Gungahlin Walk-In Centre: February 18th, 3:15 pm - 5:40 pm
  • Emergency Department Waiting Room, Canberra Hospital: Wednesday, February 18th, 6:00 pm - 8:30 pm

While these locations are no longer considered ongoing risks, the potential for exposure remains. If you develop any symptoms, it's crucial to seek medical attention promptly. Here's the controversial part: some argue that the focus should be on increasing vaccination rates to prevent future outbreaks. What's your take? Should there be stricter measures to ensure vaccination compliance, or is individual choice paramount?

HCSD advises contacting your doctor or a health service, including an emergency department, if symptoms arise. Remember to call ahead and inform them of your potential exposure, and wear a face mask when visiting.

Prevention is Key:

The measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccine is highly effective in preventing measles. If you're unsure whether you've received two doses, consult your GP or pharmacist (for individuals over five years old). The vaccine is free in the ACT, though an administration fee may apply. It's most effective when administered within 72 hours of exposure.

Vulnerable Populations:

Individuals with weakened immune systems, those undergoing chemotherapy or radiotherapy, or taking high-dose steroid medications, are particularly vulnerable. Pregnant women who are unvaccinated and parents of infants under 12 months should also contact HCSD on (02) 5124 9213 for further guidance.

This recent case follows a string of measles exposures in NSW earlier this month, with potential links still under investigation. The affected locations in NSW included cafes, supermarkets, and tourist spots in the Illawarra, Shoalhaven, and Southern Highlands regions.
