NSW is bracing for a deluge! Heavy rain, strong winds, and the threat of flash floods are on the horizon, prompting a critical warning for holidaymakers.
The Bureau of Meteorology has issued a dire forecast for the state's south, predicting up to 80mm of rain in just six hours on Friday morning. Sydney is also in for a soaking, with potential thunderstorms and up to 100mm of rain expected over the weekend.
But here's where it gets controversial: some areas along the South Coast have already received significant rainfall, with over 100mm recorded at Merimbula Airport and Green Cape. This follows flash floods in Victoria, which washed away vehicles and flooded campgrounds.
Volunteer rescuers are on high alert, with the NSW SES chief urging caution for those camping near water bodies. "Water levels can rise quickly, cutting off road access," he warns.
Some campgrounds have already been closed as a precaution, and crews are visiting high-risk areas to warn holidaymakers.
The severe weather is attributed to a low-pressure system off the coast, bringing damaging winds and persistent rain. "This event won't pass quickly," says meteorologist Angus Hines.
And this is the part most people miss: dangerous surf conditions are also expected, prompting NSW Police to advise against water activities and coastal adventures like boating and rock fishing.
