The heartbreaking case of Melodee Buzzard, a 9-year-old girl from California, has taken a tragic turn. Her mother, Ashlee Buzzard, has been arrested in connection with Melodee's death. This news, announced on Tuesday, December 23, 2025, by the Santa Barbara County Sheriff's Office, has left the community reeling.
Human remains discovered in Utah earlier in December have been confirmed as belonging to Melodee. Authorities believe she was killed, possibly in October, before she was reported missing.
On December 6, a couple stumbled upon the remains while taking photos in a rural area off State Route 24 in Wayne County, Utah. This location is significant because Melodee and Ashlee Buzzard reportedly traveled there in October. The Santa Barbara County Sheriff was notified on December 8, and initial findings indicated the remains were of a female who died from gunshot wounds to the head.
Following DNA analysis of the recovered remains, Ashlee Buzzard was taken into custody. Further investigation revealed that a spent shell casing found at the Buzzard home matched evidence from the crime scene, according to the ATF.
Ashlee Buzzard has been booked into the Santa Barbara County Jail on first-degree murder charges and is being held without bail. A court date has not yet been set.
The investigation began on October 14 when a school district administrator reported Melodee's extended absence. Authorities determined that Melodee and Ashlee Buzzard left their home in Lompoc, California, on October 7 for a three-day road trip, including a stop in the Nebraska area. Melodee was last seen alive on October 9 near the Colorado-Utah border. Ashlee Buzzard returned to Lompoc on October 10 in the rental car, but Melodee was not with her.
Authorities have stated that Ashlee Buzzard allegedly used wigs and swapped license plates during the trip and did not cooperate with the search for Melodee.
This is a developing story, and more information will be released as it becomes available.
